Prunus "Nigra"
Found throughout Eurasia, this deciduous species is classed as a large shrub or small tree. The small leaves have noticeable hairy veins on the underside. The nigra has green new growth, maturing to deep purple-black foliage. Flowers occur in spring and are a pale pink, simple shape. Used as a colour contrast against lighter shaded trees, or mass plantings. Prefer moist, well drained soils, with regular watering.
