Delonix regia
Delonix regia, commonly known as the Poinciana Tree, is one of the most stunning tropical trees in the world. Native to Madagascar, this striking ornamental tree thrives in warm, frost-free climates and is best suited for Western Australia’s temperate regions. Its vibrant scarlet to orange flowers create a spectacular summer display, contrasting beautifully against its delicate, feathery foliage.
As the tree matures, it develops a broad, umbrella-shaped canopy, making it an excellent shade tree for large gardens, streetscapes, and parks. Delonix regia is a member of the Leguminosae family and produces long, woody seed pods that can reach up to 60cm in length, turning dark brown to black when ripe. The tree’s finely divided leaves, measuring 30-50cm long, add to its elegant appearance.
This species is dormant until late October to early November when warmer temperatures stimulate new growth. It is recommended to plant or transplant during the warmer months in a mild, sheltered location to help with acclimatization. Once established, Delonix regia is drought-tolerant but benefits from additional watering during hot, dry summers. During extended dry spells or very cold conditions, the tree may shed its leaves. To support young trees through their first winter, protective measures such as shielding from cold winds and applying thick straw mulch to insulate the roots may be beneficial.
Delonix regia grows best in a sunny position with well-draining soil and can reach heights of 10-15m. With proper care, this stunning species will flourish, adding tropical beauty and brilliant color to any landscape.
Disclaimer: This plant is sensitive to frost and requires warmth for optimal growth. We strongly recommend planting during the warmer summer months to allow for successful establishment.
